Nobody Tells This to Beginners

A critique buddy of mine is walking on air. After shopping her manuscript at a conference, she signed with a top-notch agent and received big-time interest from New York and Hollywood on her work.

Our group is buzzing with pride as we help polish each word, phrase, and clause to perfection.

Thinking of her good news, I remembered this great quote from Ira Glass.  It’s an excellent reminder to keep on, keeping on.

Here’s to closing the gap!

  1. Bridgette – I’m not familiar with the quote above so really appreciate you sharing it. Of all the pieces of advice I received when I was starting out, I wish I had heard this one first.

  2. Love that quote. I was fortunate to hear the advice pretty early on, but I’ve noticed some people who really need to *hear* it, are told it, but don’t listen. I listened. Somedays I just have to forge ahead because I know it will be great in the end, but it’s hard to see the end when you get bogged down with the disappointments in the middle.

    • Yes, the disappointments are tricky. Rejections stink at anytime, but when you know you are THIS close to being on the other side. It makes you question everything. Thanks Tameri! Am looking forward to hearing about your latest WIP. I know you’ve been very busy putting the final touches on it.

  3. Never heard that quote before, that’s one that every writer needs taped above the work station. Wow. Thanks!

  4. Bridge, this is great. I love the picture of closing the gap. It’s such a positive way of thinking about our place and what we hope will happen with our work. Thank you so much for giving this to us today.

  5. Good post. If one reads it with the right perspective, it is very encouraging. Thanks for sharing!

    • I hadn’t read it from a different perspective, but now I can see how it could be a bit discouraging. Especially if one is looking for an immediate understanding of skills. Thanks for pointing that out Kimberly. :)

  6. thanks for posting this! i’m super happy for your friend. every time i hear that someone is getting closer to the dream of publication, i grin :)

    • Darlene, one of the reasons I posted this on my blog is so I could remember it. It was stuck on a post in google+ — which I never use — so I forgot about it. Glad you liked it!

  8. Another writer’s success should buoy our hopes and remind us of why we write. And why we love it.

  9. Hurrahs for your friend! High fives for the quote…it’s a timely reminder. To see growth all I have to do is read a piece of work from a while back. It’s such a rush to hear the success stories!

    • Do you ever pull out old things to read, Lesann? I just can’t. It makes me groan instead of appreciate the growth. I wish I could be more accepting of my learning curve though.

  10. LOVE IT!!! Woot woot!! So well said!
